The US National Academy of Science has highlighted the need for sustained, advanced ocean colour research and operations. Their reports show that satellites provide a unique vantage point for observing the changing biology of our ocean’s surface. The goal of the project is to enhance the ability of the earth sciences to observe ocean colour in high temporal and spatial resolution modes through the use of a low-cost, next-generation ocean colour sensor flown aboard a CubeSat. This paper will describe the technical and science objectives of the mission, the design of the payload and the spacecraft platform to support it.
