Canadian Wildland Fire Monitoring System

Canada contains 28% of the world’s boreal zone and approximately 410 million hectares of forests and woodlands.   Intense, fast-spreading wildfires have a large impact on the Canadian economy  and the health and safety of Canadians.  On an annual basis,  Canada spends approximately $1 billion to manage wildfires including detection, suppression and evacuation of communities.  COM DEV has been working with NGC Aerospace, other Canadian industrial and academic partners and the Canadian Space Agency to develop a concept for a Canadian Wildland Fire Monitoring System (CWFMS).  The mission would involve a single microsatellite that would provide reliable measurements of fire radiative power on a daily basis to assist fire management authorities and improve air quality forecasts and estimation of carbon emissions.  The system solution will leverage Canadian expertise in the development of micro-bolometer sensors and space optics and cost-effective microsatellites.
